Abstract

Soft coral genus Sinularia be a sources of terpenoid compounds that show efficacy in vitro cytotoxic test using cancer cell lines. The study looked at the morphological changes that occur in fungal mycelial growth of Pyricularia oryzae, such as curling effect indicating antimitotic activity. Four extracts of soft coral genus Sinularia have been examination and this is an primary test to obtain information about the soft coral genus Sinularia that used as sources of compound antimitotic. This research was conducted in several stages, ie extraction of bioactive substances, P. oryzae fungal culture test, and biological testing antimitotic activity with a qualitative assessment methods. From the examination the Sinularia 3 ethyl acetate fraction show the strongest antimitotic activity (to concentration 1,5 μg/ml). Ethyl acetate fraction was purified using column chromatography. From the examination show that fraction of ethyl acetate 1 is the best fraction because still show curling effect on concentration 0,7 μg/ml.Keywords : Antimitotic, Soft Coral, Sinularia, microtubule, Pyricularia oryzae

Abstract

Ex-tin mining lakes are commonly used by many people in Bangka Island for fish farming activities. The water logs of post mining lakes have been used for fish farming activities. We hypothesized possibly environmental pollution related to the water quality. This paper aimed to evaluate fish farming activities by the local communities using the waterlogs of post mining lakes. The evaluation was based on heavy metals extent in the water using survey method with purposive sampling in order to determine which extin mining lakes would be feasible for aquaculture activities. The data of the content of heavy metals and water qualities were analyzed using the method of Pollution Index (PI). According to the age of mining lakes, the five ex-tin mining lakes which has been observed. The results showed one new aged, two middle aged, and one old age; meets the quality standard eligibility for fish farming activities, while the middle aged was low polluted. The age of ex-tin mining lakes not affected nor the extent of the pollution levels or water qualities. Keywords : ex-tin mining, lakes, aquaculture, water qualities, pollution index, fish

Abstract

Growth of Nannochloropsis sp. was observed in laboratory cultivation condition with enrichment of cassava hydrolysate into culture medium as follow : 25 ml microalgae strain, 75 ml seawater, without cassava hydrolysate (A); 25 ml microalgae strain, 25 ml cassava hydrolysate, 50 ml seawater (B), 25 ml microalgae strain, 50 ml cassava hydrolysate, 25 ml seawater (C). Cultivation condition was fixed as follow temperature 29°C, seawater pH 8, and salinity 30 ‰. Microalgae cultivation was performed at microalgae laboratory of Surfactant and Bioenergy Research Center using 100 ml Erlenmeyer covered by black plastic to prevent the influence of light. The specific growth rate of Nannochloropsis sp. was observed in 7 days for different cultivation medium composition. The highest density of microalgae was in the 4th days with 50ml cassava hydrolysate’s feeding (C treatment) about 172.661 cell/mL. The highest specific growth rate for Nannochloropsis sp. cultivation was observed in the 6th days without cassava hydrolysate’s feeding. Result of statistical analysis showed that different cassava hydrolysate’s feeding treatments (ml) in heterotrophically microalgae cultivation influenced the density of microalgae (cell/mL) but not influenced the specific growth rate of microalgae (per day). Keywords: Cassava hydrolysate, Density, Heterotrophic cultivation, Spesific growth rate, Nannochloropsis sp.

Abstract

Karimata strait and the java sea is one of the most densely shipping lanes in the maritime country of Indonesia. Information of a significant wave is needed to safety navigation. The prediction of a significant wave mostly employs the modeling using wind as input data to produce an early warning warning prediction. Characteristic of a significant wave shows the maximum wave height in the strait and the java sea karimata occurs in west monsoon (January) and east season (August) every year. Especially at the peak of west monsoon (January) maximum wave height reach 1.5-3 meters in Karimata Strait, and reach 0.5-2.5 meters in Java Sea. The frequency of significant wave occurences mostly extend until February, where wave height in Java Sea will stay the same (0.5-2.5 meters), while in Karimata Strait is little bit decrease (1-2.5 meters). Recommended to all sea transportation users, in those regions during January and February, to avoid using ship with the hull is less than 3 meters height. Keywords: significant wave characteristic, Karimata Strait, Jawa Sea, Wind, Modeling

Abstract

Seaweed (Eucheuma cottonii) is one type of fishery commodities with high economic value. These commodities have been developed in several areas in Indonesia, one of them is in the Banggai Islands, Central Sulawesi. Problems in the development of commodity seaweed in Banggai is a lack of understanding and seriousness in seaweed cultivation, lack of variety in designing seaweed cultivation techniques as well as the suitability of the location of aquaculture that can support increased productivity. The use of long-line method is considered still the best way. This study aimed to evaluate the seaweed cultivation methods long line in the village of Liang and Apal, Banggai Islands, Central Sulawesi. The results showed that the seaweed growth rate were not significantly different when we compared them based on sediment types. For instance, Liang village sediment was sandy silt while we found rocky substrate at Apal village. Therefore it can be concluded that long line method can be applied without taking into account the type of sediment. Keywords: sea weed, long-line methods, Banggai archipelago

Abstract

Mineral mining (i.e. gold) activities in the land and coastal boundaries of West Sumbawa district are expected to increase the content of heavy metals in the marine and coastal waters surrounding. A residual of mining processing produce heavy metals disposal. In this study, the distributions of heavy metals (i.e. Hg, Cr6+, Cu, As, Ni, Zn, Pb, and Cd) were measured in the water column and bed sediments of coastal waters of West Sumbawa. This study was conducted during dry season in July 2011. The results showed the heavy metal concentrations in water column were below the threshold level stipulated by the Minister Decree No. 51/2004, except for Cu. The heavy metal contents in bed sediment were low and varied among sampling points excepting for Cu content which was remarkably high (101,7 mg/Kg).
